Motivation sucks! Or does it?

Motivation is the spark, the habit is the gasoline.... BOOM!

In the past, I’ve been a huge supporter of the “Motivation sucks” movement.

Whenever I was introduced on stage as a motivational speaker I would step out and quite smugly proceed to tell the world “I am not a motivational speaker, motivation doesn’t last, and if you wait until you are motivated, you’ll hardly get anything done!”

And that’s true. I still stand by that. But I think I was missing the point.

The reality we all agree on is this: great ideas and world-changing plans are first sparked in the moments of motivation.

The serotonin fires, endorphins and adrenaline hormones rush in, and you feel great like you are playing at your highest self and you can do anything. This is where Apple was conceived, where Amazon’s domination was a foregone conclusion… where magic is made.

But it’s temporary, which is why I’d say “I am not the motivation guy, I am the systems guy. You need systems that will keep working for you even when you don’t feel like it, especially when you don’t feel like it”.

Here’s where I’m going with this. What about a combination? How much more could you get done with a SYSTEM of MOTIVATION?!

If you know what ALREADY motivates you, what if you made a habit of doing those things, watching/reading/listening to those things daily?

Will that guarantee you no bad days? Well, I can’t guarantee sunshine and rainbows, but I can guarantee you’ll have much more good days ON a system than not having one in the first place.

Talk soon.
